(GMA) Resorts World attacker identified; hooked on casino gambling | The Philippine National Police on Saturday revealed the identity of man involved in the deadly attack at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City.
PH Resorts FOO is today... spicy times ahead (no ceiling/floor) (Thursday, Nov 5)

I'm blown away by your response to the MB Patreon page. I have a hard time putting into words how it feels to see notifications from Patreon, many featuring familiar names from Reddit, Discord, and email chats, saying that someone has donated some money to the MB effort. During a pandemic, a down market, and a crazy year like this. A huge shout-out and humbled thank-you goes out to our new
"Ministop Coffee Crew" patrons: JRVS, Phantom-Spirit, and Jelo Agnasin
"Starbucks Coffee Crew" patron: Karlos Naidas
"Daily Production Team" patrons, Charles A Yeung, FinanceForever, and Marilin Nery! Thank you all for your support.
You didn't have to, but you did, and I appreciate that. I raise my coffee mug in thanks to the Ministop and Starbucks Coffee Crews, and to the Daily Producers, I say keep an eye on your inbox as I'll be in touch to figure out the specific day you'd like to sponsor! To anyone else who would like to contribute, please use this link. Remember, there's no obligation, no special access, and people who don't have an EF yet shouldn't donate! Focus on yourself first. Thank you, Patreon supporters. And thank you to all the Barkadans for reading!

[UPDATE] PH Resorts [PHR 3.27 susp] FOO is today, be prepared for wackiness... the follow-on offering for Dennis Uy’s integrated casino/resort developer will hit the market a lot like the weird Altus Property Ventures [APVI 13.08 ▲0.62%] offering “by way of introduction” did: with no ceiling or floor. PHR last closed at P3.27/share before it was suspended pending this offering, which was priced at P1.68/share.
MB:BE CAREFUL. Every single AVPI share purchased on its offering day is still underwater. Have a read of what happened on that day (I sort of live-blogged it), when it finished up 82% on the day, but down 93% from its intra-day peak. If you are trading price action, SET YOUR STOPS. You don’t want to end up joining the sad crew of momentum chasers that turned into “invals” (involuntary value investors).
[Q3] Globe [GLO 2002.00 ▼0.89%] profit ▼22% y/y... Q3/20 profit of P4.4bn, down 22% from Q3/19 profit of P5.6bn. Part of that decline could be attributed to the continuing trend of consumers moving away from “traditional” voice and SMS, where margins for GLO are ridiculously high; revenue from these sectors was down 3% y/y to P36.7bn. GLO did say that the “upturn in prepaid top-ups and subscriber acquisitions” was improved q/q by the less restrictive quarantine measures over Metro Manila allowing more people to transact digitally.
MB:Up until the end of Q3, it had been GLO and TEL just tromping around the country harvesting pesos from a captive audience that had no other choice. In the broadband world, Converge [CNVRG 14.72 ▲1.24%] has loudly splashed into the national spotlight through its “PLAYER 3 HAS ENTERED THE GAME” IPO last month. While the stock hasn’t popped, CNVRG has already banked the cash. CNVRG will hit the market with a long history of experience in providing the service that it offers, with the customer support (I know, I know), back-office team, and network of commercial subscriber funnels to efficiently consume new markets. So, while Dito Telecommunity is that same “PLAYER 3 HAS ENTERED THE GAME” moment on the mobile communications front, it’s starting from way further back. It has no proven processes; it’s never processed a transaction; it’s never dealt with an outage; and it’s never performed a network upgrade with live customers. That’s not to say that Dito couldn’t figure it out (it’s probably dangerous for GLO and TEL to discount Dito outright), but it is to say that public-facing communications infrastructure, at scale, is hard. That’s part of the reason why only GLO and TEL have survived. But from Q4 onward, the gloves are off.
[Q3] Century Foods [CNPF 17.00 ▲0.95%] profit ▲15% y/y... Q3/20 profit of P1.032bn, up 15% from Q3/19 profit of P0.898bn. The profit growth was driven by the company’s “”branded marine, meat and milk products” segment, which accounted for 81% of CNPF’s total revenue. Sales in this segment, which includes brands like Century Tuna, 555, Argentina and Birch Tree, were up 16%.
MB:This result might come as cold comfort to some investors. It’s not like people have all of a sudden grown an outsized appetite for canned goods and non-perishable milk products... it’s the pandemic. At first, in the heat of the ECQ lockdown, Filipinos flocked to the familiar safety of CNPF products when presented with the possibility of the country’s supply chain failing, or other apocalyptic scenarios that had all barangays seriously considering what life would be like to have barangay captains ration food out to residents amid a medical catastrophe of unknown severity. We filled our storage areas with tuna, corned beef, and whatever else might taste ok and not spoil. Then, when our fears of systemic failure did not come to pass, but the ravages of one of the world’s longest lockdowns began to cripple commerce resulting in job losses, under-employment, and vastly reduced household earnings with plummeting consumer confidence, we “downshifted” our eating habits to recognize the need to be conservative. Instead of eating at a restaurant, we went to Jollibee. Instead of eating at Jollibee, we ate street food. Instead of eating street food, we cooked at home. Instead of fresh meat and vegetables, we bought canned goods. This was explicitly mentioned by McDonalds PH in its conference call with Goldman Sachs that I covered in August. Consumers are shifting down, and that is pushing CNPF up. If the economy improves, and things go back to normal, will these customers stay? What is CNPF doing right now to encourage continued loyalty through changing circumstances?
[Q3] International Container Terminal Services [ICT 115.50 ▲0.43%] profit ▲23% y/y... Q3/20 profit US$69m, up 23% from Q3/19 profit of US$56m. The shipping terminal owneoperator’s revenues are a pretty good proxy for global trade, as they have facilities in the Philippines (including the Manila International Container Terminal), across SE Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. ICT has a fairly clear lack of penetration into Russia/China, Europe, India, and North America, but otherwise has a strong presence in developing countries with significant raw material exports and significant finished goods imports. In Q3, ICT made more revenue (6.7% more) with fewer expenses (1.1% less), an outcome that ICT attributes to “stringent cost management”.
MB:ICT should be well-positioned to benefit from any uptick in global trade. The cost management initiative will serve ICT (and its investors) well in the time between now and when COVID fears begin to lift. We aren’t there yet, but ICT will be one of those “recovery stocks” to watch. It’s probably too early now, but keep an eye on it.

One of the most frustrating things about the Resorts World Incident is that officials have not been inspiring confidence in their credibility. There are people who come up with conspiracy theories, there are those who doubt if it was really a robbery, and there are those who might be believing the truth presented on media by the government, but still have a lot of questions on their minds. But who could blame them, when the very officials who handled the incident have very different views of what happened as well as experts on the matter having different opinions as well. Round 1: Is it a terror attack? BatodelaRosa vs. SITE Round 2: Sure na hindi ISIS? BatodelaRosa vs. Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenza (who said we cannot rule ISIS hand in the attack yet) Round 3: Sure na hindi ISIS? BatodelaRosa vs. Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez (who said he disagrees with Bato's lone wolf assessment" and insists it's a terror attack similar to what has been seen in other countries. Round 4: What is terror? BatodelaRosa (hindi terorista kasi hindi naman niya binabaril yung mga tao) vs. terror analyst Sidney Jones (who said that terror is a form of violence that aims to influence an audience...and can still sow fear in those who identifies with the victims, even without the use of gunfire) Round 5: What is terror? BatodelaRosa (hindi terror yun kasi pataas yung baril) vs. Raffy Alunan (who said that a "hallmark" of a terrorist attack is having a venue that has "high human traffic" and is "frequented by foreigners.") Round 6: The death of the shooter. BatodelaRosa (nanlaban, kaya pinatay) vs. Abella and Albayalde (suicide) Round 7: Hotel security guard accidentally shot himself. BatodelaRosa vs. RWM COO Stephen Reilly Round 8: Robbery? BatodelaRosa vs. Raffy Alunan (who expressed shock at the conclusion, and said that the shooter's actions were not the footprints of a thief)
No chief of the Philippine National Police has brought as much disgrace and discredit to the institution he heads as Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, a likeable enough police officer promoted beyond his capacity and competence. His chief claim to fame was his total support for the presidential candidacy of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, whom he worked with closely when he was Davao City police chief; the main reason he remains head of the country’s 170,000 police officers is the President’s complete trust in him. In what way has Dela Rosa been detrimental to the long-term interest of the PNP? First, he has trivialized his office. Dela Rosa is the first PNP chief to allow a police mascot to be made in his likeness; he has not only encouraged the use of the “Bato” mascot, distinguished by its bald head, but also revels in it. This is quite literally a caricature of the enormous responsibility the national police chief must discharge—especially if one were to believe the administration propaganda about the severity of the illegal drugs problem. But the mascot is perfectly representative of Dela Rosa’s approach to law enforcement: cut a high media profile, and then hope for the best. Alvarez’s cutting comments last January attacked this aspect of Dela Rosa’s time in office: He seems, the Speaker wrote, to be more “interested in having a show biz career and in landing on society pages of newspapers with his being everywhere doing mundane things like singing videoke and watching concerts.” This celebrity-seeking orientation is demoralizing to the ordinary policeman, who must contend with more and more questions about the role of the PNP in the bloody war on drugs, which mostly claims the lives of the poor. Second, he has politicized the office. Dela Rosa must have been the first PNP chief to respond to questions from senators inquiring into police matters according to their political affiliation; unctuous toward administration allies, passive-aggressive toward opposition lawmakers. This is unprofessional conduct that has consequences down the line. But beyond this, there is also the widely shared perception, discussed by politician and policeman alike, that following his initial burst of popularity he is preparing for a Senate run. I understand Alvarez’s warning then, that Dela Rosa “buckle down to work or better yet give the job to someone else who is dead serious in leading the PNP,” as a shot across the bow of the PNP chief’s political ambitions. Third, he has failed to exercise true leadership, and because of his failure, the PNP has created subcultures of impunity. These have allowed the PNP’s own illegal drugs task force to murder the likes of Jee Ick-joo, and the Manila police to host a legalized kidnap-for-ransom business. Dela Rosa’s preferred mode of interaction with the men and women of the PNP, the blustery speech, has no real impact. As Alvarez said last January: “The commission of a heinous crime right [under] his very nose is not only an insult but [also] a clear indication that he has lost the respect of his people.”
And now we have a fourth, shooting off his mouth whenever he sees media reporters and TV cameras.
The gunman, who dela Rosa described as “white, with a mustache,” about 6 feet tall and English speaking, fled the gambling area and barged into a room on the 5th floor of Maxims Hotel, which is part of the Resorts complex.
All of the confirmed victims are Filipinos and other Asian nationals.
The attack sent hundreds of people fleeing through the complex and into the night. A South Korean died of a possible heart attack suffered during the evacuation, the Foreign Ministry said. More than 70 people suffered mostly minor injuries in the stampede to escape.
White male terrorists have killed more people than Muslim refugees ever have, so if the Trump administration has placed a travel ban on Muslim countries, there should be an equally strict travel ban for male migrants from white countries. White male terrorism is a global issue the world has swept under the rug for far too long. The safety of the people of our homelands depends on enacting a swift and thorough solution to this imminent danger.
[Discussion] Security responses to the London Bridge Attack and the Resorts World Manila Attack
Both attacks occurred in each country's respective capitals. Let's take a look at security responses. London Bridge Attack 7 dead; ~more than 40 injured The Guardian article on the London Bridge terror attack The three armed terrorists begin their rampage by driving their van and hitting pedestrians. They exit and begin stabbing and shooting people. Notable police officers who took them on include one wielding a baton and another using his bare hands to rugby tackle. To some, this is batshit insane, to most this is commendable bravery. Not every policeman in the UK is armed but armed officers arrived on scene and shot all three terrorists dead within 8 minutes of them being called, which is incredibly efficient. One of the policemen accidentally shot a civilian though he is expected to make a full recovery. So far, 7 have died and I believe more than 40 were hospitalized. Keep in mind that these terrorists were purposefully aiming for people to kill so these numbers are expected to be high. The attack also occurred in a public area. The men were in a van when they began their rampage, so it would be very difficult to prevent an attack like this. Resorts World Manila Attack 37 dead; 54 injured Time article raising concerns over the security.
"…the attack took place in one of the poshest and safest areas in the country," says Richard Heydarian, assistant professor of political science at De La Salle University in Manila.
A lone gunman entered Resorts World Manila from the second floor, somehow able to smuggle his assault rifle and flammable liquids past security. Also keep in mind that this lone gunman did not appear to be targeting people to kill, and was more intent on damaging the casino and setting the place on fire. He did exchange fire with arriving security forces before shooting himself and self-immolating. The attack lasted more than 6 hours before the gunman was found dead in an apparent suicide. Most importantly, this attack happened in a casino in Manila; this place should have had competent security forces readily available at all times. The Manila Bulletin providing more info on the attack
“The only other individual who sustained a gunshot wound (besides the gunman who committed suicide with his gun) was the security guard who accidentally shot himself,” Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
[The gunman] was first challenged by an unarmed female security guard. "A security (guard), probably internal security, who is a woman, saw him. When she approached the guy, she saw the firearm. She was rattled and ran away. She was seen by the public there. That caused panic and a stampede" says Oscar Albayalde, chief of the capital's police office. Jeff Santos, a gambler at the casino who witnessed the attack told a Manila radio station some security guards panicked.
Pathetic. I understand that they were little to not armed at all, but I bring attention to those commendable British men armed only with a baton or even just using his bare hands to subdue their terrorists. Apparently, the Filipino security ran away, telling people to run. The least they could do was direct attention to the emergency exits or look for people to alert and warn them of the gunman, but alas, selfishness prevails. Most, if not all, the deceased victims died of smoke inhalation as they were trapped in a restroom. Thoughts I get that we are probably nowhere near the level of competence and capability, and bravery apparently, of British security and police force, but when you put these two side-by-side it's pretty ridiculous how shit the situation in Manila was handled. Either this speaks levels to the competence and bravery of British security and police, or it just further proves the incompetence and ineptitude and cowardice of Filipino security and police. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see an exodus from our investors after this incident or if another incident occurs and we once again poorly handle the situation.
The Greatest Sport On Earth - A guide to the best fights in boxing history
Nothing beats a great fight. Not football, not soccer, not baseball. Want to put this to the test? If your neighbors were throwing down on your lawn during the Super Bowl, your living room would be empty before someone could shout out World Star. What follows below is a comprehensive list of the greatest fights of all time. Not all fights are created equally. Some are here for different reasons. They will be labeled as such. One thing you will learn is that great fights are always happening. If you like Rocky type of violence, you only need to tune into any card 3 hours early and watch young kids desperately try to make their names against veterans who are clinging onto their meek stance in the sport. Let's get right into things:
The Classics
Below is a list of the generally agreed upon greatest fights. If you’re on the fence or brand new to boxing, this is the first list of fights you should look at. Below have stood the test of time. The events of the fights below leave a lasting impression. They never leave the mind. They require revisiting again and again because full appreciation of the brutality, of the artistry, of the drama cannot be drunk in just one gulp.

Contemporary Classics
These fights are a little more recent. Mostly post 80s, but certainly deserving of being in a separate category of classic fights.

12 rounds WBC world middleweight title February 24, 1989 Convention Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey YouTube Note: I typically do not re-watch fights. I have a few that I do for sentimental reasons, but on the whole I don't watch fights more than once if I don't have to. I've provided some blurbs below from what I can remember of fights. As I remember more, I'll continue to add them in. Nearly all of these fights are on YouTube.
Heavyweight Brawls
Everyone loves a good heavyweight scrap, right? I can't be as detailed with the rest of the lists (you'll soon see why) so if one of these interests you, you're gonna have to do the googling yourself. Anyway, this is part of the fun of boxing anyway. Simply watching a brawl isn't always enough. There's nothing quite like watching a back and forth fight with some emotional investment or having something at stake in the fight. I recommend from here on out you research these fighters. You might spoil the result, but most of these fights stand alone. Even if you know the result they're nearly all exciting.
Ike Ibeabuchi vs David Tua
Lamon Brewster vs Siarhei Liakhovich
Michael Moorer vs Bert Cooper
Tommy Morrison vs Razor Rudduck
Tommy Morrison vs Joe Hipp
Ron Lyle vs Ernie Shavers
Lennox Lewis vs Vitali Klitschko
Derrick Jefferson vs Maurice Harris
Jumbo Cummings vs Frank Bruno
The 80s
It's going to be rare to find any of these fights in crystal clear HD, but I don't think it's necessary. Knockouts are knockouts.
Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Yaqui Lopez II (I can't remember where I read this, but someone said "You know a guy is guaranteed fireworks when his name is Yaqui.")
Freddie Pendleton vs Frankie Randall
Rocky Kelly vs Tony Brown
Bernardo Pinango vs Frankie Duarte
Michael Carbajal vs Will Grigsby
Art Jimmerson vs Lenny LaPaglia (There is very little defense in this one.)
Freddie Roach vs Tommy Cordova (Watching Freddie Roach fight will tell you all you need to know about how he trains.)
Bobby Chacon vs Cornelius Boza Edwards
Edwin Rosario vs Jose Luis Ramirez
The 90s
Okay, quality is steadily increasing.
Johnny Tapia vs Paulie Ayala (A lot of sites list this among the classics list at the very top. I'm not going to go that far because I like balance.)
Marco Antonio Barrera vs Kennedy McKinney (This is the first fight ever on HBO's Boxing After Dark. It's a highly tactical war.)
Pernell Whitaker vs Jose Luis Ramirez (Who said defense wasn't fun?)
Junior Jones vs Kennedy McKinney
Israel Vazquez vs Marcos Licona
Michael Carbajal vs Muanchai Kitikasem
Micky Ward vs Reggie Green (If we were going to put together a list of the fighters who went the farthest on heart alone, Micky Ward would be somewhere in the top 10)
Naseem Hamed vs Kevin Kelley (The Prince was a special fighter. You'll see why.)
Marlon Starling vs Maurice Blocker (significant for Roach vs Futch)
Arturo Gatti vs Wilson Rodriguez (Gatti is guaranteed entertainment. Here is another shining example of why you don't hook with a hooker.)
Jorge Arce vs Michael Carbajal
Oscar De La Hoya vs Shane Mosley (Two of the top pound-for-pound fighters get together and take turns putting a beating on the other guy. Oscar's jab was such a thing of beauty in the 90s that Mosley complains of back pain from his neck snapping back.)
Erik Morales vs Daniel Zaragoza
Oscar De La Hoya vs Fernando Vargas (Lots and lots of drama in this one. Wild crowd takes it over the top.)
The 00s
Juan Manuel Marquez vs Juan Diaz I (All-out, aggressive, face-first offense walks into one of the greatest counter-punchers of all time. Guess what happens...)
Manny Pacquiao vs Erik Morales I & II (Before he became Manny Pacquiao, he had to go to school somewhere.)
Marco Antonio Rubio vs Enrique Ornelas (Traditional Mexican style war)
Silence Mabuza vs Yonnhy Perez
Fernando Montiel vs Luis Melendez (Montiel used to be a bad little man)
Roman Martinez vs Daniel Jimenez
Joe Calzaghe vs Mikkel Kessler (Fantastic fight featuring an established champion and a young up-and-comer)
Adonis Stevenson vs Anthony Bonsante
Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam vs Would Guarras
Bernard Hopkins vs Felix Trinidad (You've got to read about the build-up around the fight. This was one of the first sporting events after September 11.)
Carl Thompson vs Sebastiaan Rothmann
Luis Concepcion vs Hernan Marquez II (This is what happens when you mix gasoline and fire)
Giovani Segura vs Ivan Calderon I (All-out offense vs a defensive master.)
Giovani Segura vs Hernan Marquez (All-out offense vs all-out offense)
Giovanni Segura vs Cesar Chinchilla I (All-out offensive vs more offense)
Rogers Mtagwa vs Artom Simony
John Duddy vs Yori Boy Campas
Carl Thompson vs Ezra Sellers
Alex Stewart vs Ezra Sellers
Micky Ward vs Emanuel Augustus (An absolute must-watch. It probably could qualify as a classic. If you're a new fan, these fighters are required watches.)
Alex Arthur vs Michael Gomez (This is a wild fight with an even crazier crowd. The atmosphere is truly special.)
Paul Samuels vs Cello Renda I
Satoshi Hosono vs Hiroyuki Enoki
Tomas Villa vs Rogers Mtgawa
Daniel Edouard vs Willie Gibbs
Kelly Pavlik vs Jermain Taylor (The emergence of a monster dismantles the boxer.)
James Toney vs Vassiliy Jirov (The counter punching master revival)
Carl Froch vs Jean Pascal (This is a brutal fight between two guys looking to make a name.)
Felix Trinidad vs Fernando Vargas (The Puerto Rican superstar controversial stops a Mexican warrior)
Felix Trinidad vs Ricardo Mayorga (The Puerto Rican superstar gets his chance to shut Mayorga's mouth up.)
Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto (One of the most controversial and bloody fights in recent memory.)
Joel Casamayor vs Michael Katsidis (Katsidis knows one thing and he knows it well.)
Graham Earl vs Michael Katsidis (This is a Katsidis fight so you know what to expect.)
Carl Froch vs Jermain Taylor (A dramatic fight with a big finish.)
2010 to Now
Sergio Martinez vs Paul Williams I (Two of the most avoided fighters in boxing meet since nobody else would fight them. The result is magical.)
Tim Bradley vs Ruslan Provodnikov (A dramatic and brutal fight between two of the toughest warriors in the sport.)
Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez IV (The conclusion to their epic series is the best installment of the series.)
Orlando Salido vs Juan Manuel Lopez (Mexico vs Puerto Rico does it again.)
Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado I (Not much technical boxing going on here. Just a classic slugfest.)
Marcos Maidana vs Victor Ortiz (Nobody deserves to take a beating like these guys took.)
Orlando Salido vs Terdsak Kokietgym (I lost count of the knockdowns.)
Francisco Rodriguez Jr vs Katsunari Takayama (Takayama only knows how to fight like his life is on the line.)
Mike Alvarado vs Breidis Prescott (A brutal fight.)
Marcos Madiana vs Josesito Lopez (Another classic slugfest from Maidana.)
Marco Huck vs Krzysztof Glowacki (A long reigning champion meets a young hungry lion.)
Adrien Broner vs Marcos Maidana (Adrien Broner stands toe-to-toe with Marcos Maidana. The winner earns a shot at Floyd Mayweather.)
Carl Froch vs Mikkel Kessler I & II (Two elite super middleweights have a pair of classic wars.)
Lucas Matthysse vs John Molina (Molina tells everyone he's not afraid of Matthysse and has power of his own. Then the bell rings.)
Erik Morales vs Marcos Maidana (A throwback performance from a legendary Mexican warrior against one of the hardest punchers in the sport.)
Victor Ortiz vs Josesito Lopez (Ortiz brings offense. Lopez brings more.)
Tommy Coyle vs Daniel Brizuela (A wild back and forth fight with enough knockdowns for this entire list.)
Victor Ortiz vs Andre Berto ("Oh my god!")
Terence Crawford vs Yuriorkis Gamboa (Two elite boxers meet for a wild back-and-forth fight.)
Orlando Salido vs Roman Martinez I (Mexico vs Puerto Rico. Enough said.)
Chris John vs Daud Yordan (The long reigning paper champion of Indonesia loses some years off his career.)
Derry Mathews vs Tommy Coyle (A wild fight.)
Omar Figueroa vs Nihito Arakawa (There is literally no defense in this fight.)
