Hexagonal Architecture The general idea behind the hexagonal architecture style is that the dependencies (adapters) required by the software to run are used behind an interface (port). The software is divided into Application and Infrastructure, in which adapters are interchangeable components developed and tested in isolation. A hexagonal architecture simplifies deferring or changing technology decisions. You want to change to a different framework? Write a new adapter. You want to use a database, instead of storing data in files? Again, write an adapter for it. Draw a boundary around the business logic. The hexagon. Anything inside A Test-Driven implementation. With the Hexagonal Architecture, you put your functional tests in your domain. Those tests will call directly the domain API while avoiding any disturbance from the technical part. In a way you are creating an adapter simulating the Controller to test the features of the domain. Hexagonal architecture has been created by Alistair Cockburn and clean architecture by uncle bob. Both tries to solve the same issue : create borders around the domain and protect it from stuff not directly related like ui, database access and so on. To be honest I read and saw few videos and article about hexagonal architecture and as far as I Remember to read Part 1 of this series where I collected a lot of information about Hexagonal (Ports and Adapters) Architecture. Clean architecture series— Part 1. To summarize Hexagonal Architecture, let’s bring back quickly a self-explanatory diagram: Ports and Adapters in the diagram ( https://softwarecampament.wordpress.com Hexagonal Architecture (aka Ports and Adapters) is one strategy to decouple the use cases from the external details. It was coined by Alistar Cockburn more than 13 years ago, and this received improvements with the Onion and Clean Architectures. Let me introduce the Hexagonal Architecture’s intent: The Clean Architecture. 13 August 2012. Over the last several years we’ve seen a whole range of ideas regarding the architecture of systems. These include: Hexagonal Architecture (a.k.a. Ports and Adapters) by Alistair Cockburn and adopted by Steve Freeman, Figure 2.4: A hexagonal architecture is also called a "ports-and-adapters" architecture since the application core provides specific ports for each adapter to interact with. The preceding figure shows what a hexagonal architecture might look like. The application core is represented as a hexagon, giving this architecture style its name. In onion, hexagonal, or clean architecture, the domain layer is in the center (i.e. the domain layer does not depend on any layers other than the domain model which is used for transferring data to other layer or accepting data from the higher layer).
